Are you a marble jar boss?

Hi, everyone,

How many times have you agreed to do something while the little voice inside of your head screams “I can’t believe I’m doing this”!?

There’s a common myth that compassion means doing it all, but according to Dr. Brené Brown, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, according to Brown’s research, the most compassionate people on the planet all share one thing in common: Strong boundaries.

THE LANGUAGE OF LEADERSHIP

Compassionate leaders know how to maintain and honor their own boundaries. They understand that by getting clear on “what’s ok and what’s not ok” and adhering and voicing those boundaries they create a foundation for trust. Why? Because only when you are clear about your boundaries and you hold to them, and I’m clear about my boundaries and you respect them, can real trust begin to form between us. In order to start bringing boundaries to the forefront of your mind, ask yourself:

  •  Have you gotten clear on your boundaries?

  • Have you asked others about their boundaries?

  • How have you adapted your boundaries over the last 6 months?

The Anatomy of Trust by Brené Brown

Trust is a lynch pin for connection, courage and compassion not only in relation to others but ourselves too. In this wonderful talk, Brown breaks down what trust really means through the analogy of a marble jar. What she has discovered, she explains, is that trust is formed by the small gestures that add up--like marbles in a jar. Another way to think of it is like this...if your marble jar is not full and you’re constantly breaking trust with yourself (I.E., agreeing to do things you don’t actually want to do!) then how can you expect to build trust with others? We must learn to have clarity and kindly voice our own needs and boundaries to truly practice compassion with others on a deep, authentic level.
