Get curious, not furious.

Hi, everyone,

Just curious: How many of you have pitched an idea at work only to have it shut down?

I wish I could tell you that your manager will always be blown away by your ideas. But let’s be honest, as you already know, that’s not always the case.

While it might be tempting to either persuade your manager that they are straight up missing the brilliance behind your idea or to let yourself believe you’re a failure for missing the mark, neither one of these reactions are actually productive.

A far more resilient option?

Getting curious.

 THE LANGUAGE OF LEADERSHIP

Get curious, not furious. - Brené Brown

This week at Coffee with Carrie we talked about the hidden benefits and common barriers to curiosity in the workplace. Benefits such as fewer decision making errors, alternative ideas, reduced group conflict, innovation and positive change, open communication, as well as better team performance.

In short, when we stay curious, we can engage in difficult things from a place of growth.

Take the above example, by allowing ourselves to get curious we can begin asking questions like: What went well when I pitched that idea? What didn’t go well? What can I learn from this? How can I approach pitching this idea in a different way in the future? Did I convey my positive intentions here?

This type of thinking is what allows us to expand our peripheral vision in order to explore more possibilities and options, avoid getting stuck, and grow through our efforts, challenges, mistakes, and feedback.
