How to Increase Productivity in Your Home or At Work
For so many of us, no matter how much we love working from home, it can be incredibly hard to steer clear of distractions, stay focused, and produce consistently great results.
Permission to be human, am I right?
What I’ve realized is that so much of setting yourself up for productive work at home lies in the state of your environment– from maintaining a clear, comfortable space to adding things that spark joy wherever and whenever you can!
Below are a few of my favorite home office hacks that I hope will help you feel more focused, joyful, and optimized this week.
The first step in any productive space is trusting the experts.
When it comes to creating a productive workspace, we know we can trust the advice of organizational guru Marie Kondo.
Although her method is often associated with minimalism, she tells us that the first step in creating a tidy, productive space is to imagine your ideal lifestyle. She writes, “for some, this vision might be to surround yourself with the bare essentials, for others it could mean living in a home teeming with beloved art, books, collections and heirlooms.”
To her, “joy is personal. Each individual’s ideal life, and space, will look different from the next.”
Ask yourself, how do you want to feel when you work? What might the office space of the leader you aspire to be look like? Then look around in a non-judgemental way and consider: Does your current environment match that vision?

Ready to create a more joyful work environment? We’ve got you.
I recommend designating a physical location in your home solely for work. If possible, try to set it up near a window with plenty of natural light because… who are we kidding? Fluorescent light is NOT CUTE.
Next up, declutter! Clear space, clear mind, right? Too much clutter has a negative impact on our mental health; and so when we carve out the time to declutter our working spaces, we also clear our minds, minimize distractions, and find focus.
Indulge in fun supplies that fit your style– from your favorite pens to colorful Post-It notes, a mini whiteboard for brainstorming and a pretty water bottle to ensure you’re staying hydrated all day long.
Have the urge to splurge on some new tech equipment? Invest in an upgraded ring light and a high-quality podcast mic to look and sound your best for every virtual call. And my absolute favorite of them all? A beautiful hourglass to crush some pomodoros.
To put the finishing touches on your home office, take some time to personalize your Zoom background.
While working remotely, our home offices have become one of the latest forms of self-expression. So, what’s behind you? Think about the ways that you can make your background more aesthetically pleasing to you– you can start by including inspiring books, souvenirs from previous adventures, lush plants, and eccentric art.
At the end of the day, I’ve found that my biggest productivity boost comes from adding more of what sparks joy into my workspace. This can be as simple as an ongoing productivity playlist, my favorite candle, essential oils, motivational quotes within sight, and even fidget toys.
