What Does Whole Person Development Even Mean?

Hi, everyone,

Let’s face it, when things are good at work they go better at home and vice versa. Especially with the increase in remote work, it’s almost impossible to separate work from home these days.

This means, now more than ever before leaders will need to learn to holistically develop their employees. After all, you hired the whole person, so why wouldn’t you develop the whole person as well?

THE LANGUAGE OF LEADERSHIP

A whole person approach is an interconnected way of looking at development and training. Not only does it focus on career development, but it takes into account an individual’s vision for themselves in all areas of their life. The goal of whole person development is to go beyond just professional success and help provide opportunities for deeper self actualization. Benefits of this approach include improved retention, culture, and company profitability.

Human beings are emotionally-driven creatures, and the “whole-person” approach knows this. Everyone in an organization is coming to the table with emotions, and these emotions are fueling their decisions and ability to show up and give that extra spark at work.

In the above video, Rosalind Brewer sat down with Hoda Kotb to talk about what whole person development looks like for her. During the interview, Hoda asked Rosalind, “When you’re hiring people? What are you looking for?” In addition to diversity of thought, race, and gender, Brewer shared that she wants to understand “what’s inside the person,” because “at some point, their inner is going to become their outer experience.” We especially loved how Brewer spoke about the importance of employees making time for events outside of work, including soccer games, track meets, recitals, etc. Why? “If you’re not your whole person at work, I get half of your performance. If you have the jubilation of seeing your child do something great. The next day you can come and just give it your all,” she shares.

GREATNESS TAKES GUIDANCE

At Leadology, whole person development is a core value of ours. Just as the external and business environment is shifting, so are the needs of the individuals who are a part of it. Now more than ever it’s important to provide your employees with training that will help them excel in all areas of their life, give them permission to be themselves, and to develop them so they can show up and give their all.
