What to Do if You’ve Been Recently Promoted to Manager

Carrie Skowronski of Leadology on What to Do if You’ve Been Recently Promoted to Manager

Have you recently been promoted to manager? At Leadology, we promise to always tell it like it is… and we’re not going to lie, transitioning from buddy to boss is not easy. There are many factors that contribute to the lack of ease surrounding any promotion, including the reality that suddenly the way you’re viewed by your closest work friends changes when you step into your new role. The good news? Being viewed differently doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

Today we’re sharing our top tips for a smooth transition from buddy to boss.

What *not to do* after you’ve recently been promoted

The biggest mistake we see during the transition from buddy to boss is newly-appointed managers brushing their new role under the rug. While it’s natural to want to feel a sense of belonging with your team and promise “you’re still one of them,”  this attitude can keep the entire team stuck. It’s far more helpful to share what this new role means, not only for you but for your team. What will you be doing now? What does that mean in terms of the development you can provide them? What responsibilities will you own versus delegate? What fears, hopes, or concerns might be coming up?

Addressing the elephant in the room as soon as possible and constructively making a plan for working together can immediately begin to alleviate tension.

What to do after your new role has begun

The next step is to set up regular one-on-one sessions, so you can continue to discuss short and long-term goals and clear any obstacles that could get in your team's way.
