Learning, Unlearning, and Compassion Through Strife

This is a rough time for many of us. First, we were hit by the global pandemic, along with political and personal stresses... and now we're feeling the impact of racial strife, violence, injustice, and more.

It’s no longer enough to stand by and hope for change; we have to demand it - in our policies, in each other, in ourselves, and in our organizations.

THE LANGUAGE OF LEADERSHIP

At Leadology, we are committed to furthering the conversation and doing the work to combat racism and inequality.

We haven’t always done enough, but we pledge to do more.

Today I wanted to share some resources, organizations, and things that have come up for me and the team during this time.

Curated Resources from Leadology

We Need to Talk About an Injustice

If you find yourself becoming intimidated by the information flooding our social media feeds, I highly recommend starting with this TED Talk by Bryan Stevenson in which he shares some hard truths about America’s justice system. This talk was recommended to us by Brené Brown during our Dare to Lead certification. I found it to be filled with history and facts, and equally eye-opening and inspiring.

Book

White Fragility

Please read White Fragility by Dr. Robin DiAngelo. Back in February, this book was recommended to me by my dear friend and powerful community builder, Cyndie Spiegel.  At first, it made me feel uncomfortable and defensive, but I learned that even though I view myself as well-intended, I still have work to do, learning, unlearning, and most importantly practicing noticing how racism shows up in me and the people around

me.

Podcast (1 Hour)

Brené with Ibram X. Kendi on How to Be an Antiracist

Internally, we are focused on our own continued learning by doing a team read of How to Be Antiracist by Ibrim X. Kendi. We will share our insights, but you can get a preview by listening to the powerful conversation between him and Brené on her Unlocking Us  podcast.

Movie (2 Hours)

Just Mercy

I recently watched Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson's movie on Netflix. It was so powerful to see the story of his work as a young lawyer working to achieve justice for innocent inmates on death row.

IG Accounts (Ongoing)

I have been learning and unlearning a ton from the below IG accounts, each of which take a deep look into systemic racism.

GREATNESS MEANS ACTION

Finally, Leadology has made a donation to The Conscious Kid, an education, research, and policy organization dedicated to reducing bias and promoting positive identity development in youth. Beyond addressing issues of race and racism, their children’s books focus on taking action. They highlight resistance, resilience, and activism, and seek to empower youth to participate in the ongoing movement for racial justice. Children not only need to know what individual, systemic, and internalized racism looks like, they need to know what they can do about it. You, too, can donate here

What resources have you found valuable?

We are listening. We are learning. We are unlearning. And we are with you.
